Triple-A Durham to sport R2-D2-themed Star Wars uniforms May 4
March 25, 2014

After spending May 4 on the road last year, the Durham Bulls are taking their Star Wars game to the next level this year.

The Bulls, Triple-A affiliates of the Tampa Bay Rays, unveiled the R2-D2-themed jerseys they'll wear when they host Columbus on Sunday, May 4, at 5:05 p.m. The game-worn jerseys will then be entered into a silent auction with proceeds going to the Autism Society of North Carolina.

Durham's R2-D2 uniforms are latest entry in Minor League Baseball's long history of imaginative promotions. With May 4 becoming an unofficial Star Wars holiday ("May the fourth be with you"), ballclubs have responded with typical aplomb.

Last year the Toledo Mud Hens wore Wookiee-themed Star Wars jerseys on May 4-5; this year they've already announced plans to don Ghostbusters shirts on May 30. The Buffalo Bisons wore Jedi-inspired jerseys last June. And going in a slightly different direction, the Fresno Grizzlies will be sporting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles outfits on Aug. 2.
