Squirrels' 2B Leads MiLB with .994 Fielding Percentage
October 4, 2012

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball and Rawlings Sporting Goods Company, Inc., are pleased to announce that Ryan Cavan has been awarded the 2012 Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove Award at the second base position. Cavan, who spent the entire 2012 season in Richmond, becomes the first Flying Squirrel to receive a Rawlings Gold Glove Award for their time with the Squirrels.

The award is bestowed upon the top defensive player at each position from the 10 qualifying domestic-based, full-season leagues. Cavan led all of full-season minor league second baseman with a fielding percentage of .994. In 124 games and 684 total chances, the 25-year old committed just four errors. He recorded 402 assists, 278 putouts and aided 99 double-plays.

"The baseball season is a grind, and it takes a tremendous amount of focus and dedication to succeed day in and day out," said Cavan. "I am honored to receive this award, as I believe it shows how much commitment I have towards improving myself on the defensive side of the game."

The honor cements what has been a remarkable defensive transformation for the California native. In 2010, while with the Augusta Green Jackets, Cavan finished with the second-most errors in the South Atlantic League (A) (26) among second baseman.

2012 Richmond RHP Craig Westcott received the 2011 Rawlings Gold Glove Award for the pitching position, however that award was based upon his performance with the San Jose Giants (A+).

Originally a 16th round draft selection of the San Francisco Giants out of the University of California - Santa Barbara, Cavan was a fourth-year pro during the 2012 season.
