Cavazos-Galvez perfect in Dogs' win

Brian Cavazos-Galvez was hitless in his first four at-bats of the Arizona Fall League season, and his team was winless in two games. On the third day of AFL action, he made both of those facts ancient history.

"After tying the first game and losing [Wednesday] night, it's good to get the team going," the Dodgers outfield prospect said.

Cavazos-Galvez went 5-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in Glendale's 11-0 shutout of Surprise on Thursday.

"It's nice to start out early like this," said Cavazos-Galvez. "I was just able to put together decent at-bats."

After singling in the second inning, he whacked a two-bagger to left field in the fourth and another in the sixth to help set the tone for the rout.

"I was looking for something I could handle," he said. "I got both of those on the outside part of the plate, so they were not necessarily pull pitches, but they were good pitches to hit. I caught them both out front a little bit."

His bases-loaded single in the seventh started a six-run scoring spree in that inning. He said coming into that at-bat with three hits already under his belt improved his chances for a fourth.

"You know, whenever things are tending to go your way, you have more fun," Cavazos-Galvez explained. "Any time you have more fun, you have more confidence."

In the eighth, the 26-year-old outfielder hit an 0-2 offering passed Saguaros reliever and No. 13 Baltimore prospect Jason Gurka for an infield hit.

"Actually, off the bat, I thought, 'Oh, I'm out.' I saw [Gurka] leaping for it off the mound," he said. "He might have tipped it with his glove. But when I saw that he missed it, I kicked into high gear."

Cavazos-Galvez, whom Los Angeles picked out of the University of New Mexico in the 12th round of the 2009 Draft, played for Salt River in 2011. He hit .278 with 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored over 19 games. This season, he batted .263 for Double-A Chattanooga, and he's excited at the chance to continue developing in the AFL.

"It's a great league. You can't beat the [level of] competition. Everyone knows how to play," Cavazos-Galvez said. "Playing against the best improves your own game. It's more an honor to be playing against all these guys than it is just to be on the team."

No. 15 Reds prospect Yorman Rodriguez homered and doubled and 15th-ranked White Sox prospect Micah Johnson tripled, collected three RBIs and crossed the plate twice for the Desert Dogs.

White Sox right-handed prospect Stephen McCray, who earned the win for Glendale, was one of six pitchers to combine on the three-hit shutout.

"That's huge," said fellow South Siders prospect Charlie Leesman. "This is my second time here. I know this is 90-10 in favor of hitters out here. To put up a shutout is pretty impressive with everyone who threw tonight."

Leesman entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the third. He induced a grounder off the bat of top Rangers prospect Jorge Alfaro to get the Desert Dogs out of trouble.

"I threw a fastball inside," Leesman said. "I figured that chances are he was swinging first pitch with the bases loaded, so I wanted to throw something not easily hit. I put good rotation on it and kind of jammed him like I was planning and got a slow ground ball to third base."

Leesman gave up a leadoff walk in an otherwise perfect fourth.
