Charleston Earns Sweep With Finale Win

September 3, 2012

Augusta, GA - With three runs on five hits in the first inning, the Charleston RiverDogs took an early lead and never looked back. The RiverDogs picked up a 7-1 win over the Augusta GreenJackets in the season finale for both teams, allowing the RiverDogs to earn the four-game series sweep.

RBI singles from Saxon Butler, Rob Refsnyder and Casey Stevenson - the final three of the five consecutive RiverDogs hits in the first inning - gave Charleston a 3-0 lead. They added another run in the second on Casey McGehee's RBI double. In the fifth, a costly throwing error after Charleston's third hit of that inning gave the RiverDogs a 6-0 edge. Charleston grew the lead to 7-0 in the seventh on Francisco Arcia's RBI groundout.

Paul Davis (6-8) never recovered from the first-inning onslaught, but battled bravely through six innings in the season finale. He allowed six runs - four earned - on 11 hits and a walk while striking out three.

The GreenJackets were held to just one hit against Charleston starter Bryan Mitchell and three in the entire contest. Mitchell (9-11) fired six scoreless innings and didn't walk anyone while striking out six.

Augusta got on the scoreboard to avoid the shutout in their season finale on Elliott Blair's two-out RBI single in the seventh inning. In the four-game sweep, Charleston outscored the GreenJackets 24-5.

The loss brings Augusta's overall record in 2012 to 69-70 and 37-33 in the second half in their second season under Lipso Nava. 2012 is the first year as a Giants affiliate where the GreenJackets did not finish with a winning record in the overall standings.

The GreenJackets will open the 2013 season at home against the Lexington Legends on April 4th 2013. Information on purchasing or renewing 2013 season seats is available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
