Chiefs fall 9-4 in first game with Bats

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, were dealt a 9-4 loss by the Louisville Bats on Monday afternoon. Louisville scored four runs in the fourth inning off Chiefs starter Ross Detwiler and put the game away with five seventh inning tallies off relievers Adam Carr and Lee Hyde. Detwiler was outdueled by Bats starter Matt Klinker, who allowed just one run on four hits in six and two-thirds innings.

Louisville (28-23) started the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Yonder Alonso singled and Jeff Frazier walked to bring up right fielder Jeremy Hermida. Hermida's single drove in a run to give the Bats a 1-0 lead, and Corky Miller followed with a three-run home run to extend the lead to four runs.

Syracuse (22-26) got one run back in the seventh inning on a two-out single by Corey Brown. The Bats would answer back immediately against Carr and Hyde. Chris Valiaka, Kristopher Negron, and Alonso laced three consecutive singles to start the inning, with Alonso's hit scoring a run. Carr then threw a wild pitch which scored a run, and Todd Frazier walked to end Carr's relief stint. Against Hyde, Louisville scored three more runs on a passed ball, bases loaded walk, and wild pitch.

The Chiefs mounted a late rally in the eighth inning. Gregor Blanco hit his first Syracuse home run to lead off the frame, before Jesus Flores' single and a Jerry Gil wild pitch scored two more Chiefs runs. Jeff Frazier popped out in foul territory to end the inning with Flores at third.

Syracuse and Louisville do battle tomorrow at 6:35. The Chiefs will send righthander Brad Meyers to the mound against Bats righty Scott Carroll.
