Yankees win 15-1
July 25, 2011

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped their third straight game to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Monday night in a 15-1 defeat. Chiefs starter Yunesky Maya lasted just three-plus innings, allowed eight hits and seven runs, as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre claimed its third series victory against Syracuse this season.

After a scoreless first, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (54-47) began a parade of baserunners against Maya in the second inning. With two outs, Jordan Parraz walked and Austin Krum doubled him to third. After a walk to Luis Nunez loaded the bases, Doug Bernier lined a full-count pitch into center field for a two-run single. Kevin Russo then singled home Nunez for the third run of the inning.

The Yankees got started early against Syracuse (44-57) starter Maya in the third inning. Jesus Montero drilled a solo home run to lead off the inning. After a Mike Lamb single, Jorge Vazquez launched his 22nd home run, giving the Yankees a 6-0 lead. Maya was taken out after Russo and Greg Golson singled in the fourth inning. Russo would come around to score on a single from Lamb against Jeff Mandel.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tacked on some late-game insurance in the last four innings. In the sixth inning, the Yankees scored without a hit against reliever Ryan Tatusko. Two hit by pitches and a walk loaded the bases for Vazquez, who scored one with a sacrifice fly.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's offense exploded in the eighth inning against right-hander Collin Balester. The Yankees sent 13 batters to the plate, collecting eight hits and scoring seven runs. With one out, Balester was removed for outfielder Jeff Frazier, who got the final two outs of the innings in relief. It was Frazier's second pitching appearance of the season; he has not allowed a run in either.

While the Yankees plated 15 runs, the Chiefs were shut out for eight innings until Seth Bynum's ninth-inning solo home run.. Starter Adam Warren allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings, while rehabbing right-hander Rafael Soriano collected the win with a 1-2-3 fifth.

The Chiefs return home Tuesday night to start a four-game series with the Columbus Clippers at 7:05. Right-hander Craig Stammen will deal for Syracuse against Columbus righty Justin Germano.
