Chiefs hold off Wings

Repko, Robertson bright spots for slumping club
May 20, 2010
A three-run fifth inning broke up a solid Triple-A debut by Rochester left-hander Tyler Robertson, and the Syracuse Chiefs held on for a 4-3 win over the slumping Red Wings Thursday night at Frontier Field. Jason Repko had four hits and three runs batted in. The homestand concludes with a Friday night 7:05 p.m. contest, with fireworks after the game.

After the game, Minnesota called up Trevor Plouffe and optioned Jeff Manship to the Wings.

First innings were a problem for Robertson in New Britain this season, with a 6.43 first inning ERA. Robertson notched a strikeout of Justin Maxwell to open the game. After an error by Toby Gardenhire put Leonard Davis on second base, Robertson stayed focused and got a ground out and a second strikeout to complete the top of the first.

In his second start after his stint with Minnesota, Matt Tolbert delivered with the bat and the glove in the first two innings. In his first at-bat he hit a rocket down the left field line for a double, for his first hit back with Rochester. The next half inning Tolbert made a diving stop on a ground ball off the bat of Chase Lambin, got to his feet and threw a bullet to first for the out.

Robertson showed more composure in the second inning after Gardenhire's second error of the game, when he struck out Eric Bruntlett with Pete Orr on second base

Brock Peterson continued his hot hitting against Syracuse and rookie Jeff Mandel (three home runs and five RBI in five games), with a single in his first at bat moving Jacque Jones to third base and giving the Wings their first scoring chance of the game. Gardenhire hit a ground ball off the foot of Mandel, but Mandel was able to gather himself and the ball to make the out at first and end the threat.

Repko led off the bottom of the third with a line drive homer into the visiting bullpen in left field, giving Robertson and the Wings a 1-0 lead.

After four straight innings of not allowing the lead-off hitter to reach base, Robertson found himself in trouble after hitting the first batter and then giving up a double to start the fifth.. A walk loaded the bases followed by a strikeout, then an infield hit brought in the tying run for the Chiefs. A two-run Josh Whitesell single up the middle put Syracuse ahead 3-1.

Consecutive singles to lead off the sixth ended Robertson's debut in Rochester. After allowing only one hit threw four innings, the fifth and the sixth proved to be more difficult for Robertson where he allowed three runs and four hits in those two innings. Robertson finished his strong debut in Rochester with 5+ innings of work, striking out six and only allowing three runs. Tim Lahey entered the game with runners at first and second and no outs but was able to hold the game at 3-1 by getting a fly out and a strikeout with two runners in scoring position to end the inning.

For the Chiefs, Mandel settled down after giving up a home run to Repko in the third. He retired 15 of his next 17 batters, only allowing an infield single to Repko and a walk to Dustin Martin. Martin stole second base after his walk, for his fourth steal of the season tying Repko as the team leader in that category, but was unable to advance past second. Mandel allowed just five hits over seven innings, striking out five.

Rochester staged a comeback attempt in their half of the ninth, after a pair of one-out hits by Danny Valencia and Jones. Closer Joel Peralta was summoned and got Peterson to pop out, but walked Gardenhire to load the bases and bring the winning run to the plate in Repko. On a 1-1 pitch, Repko ripped a two-run single to make it a 4-3 game. But Peralta fanned Tolbert to end the threat and the game.

The Wings have now dropped four straight games, and 11 of their last 14. Cole DeVries finished the night on the mound for the Red Wings, allowing a ninth inning run.

This Day in Red Wing Baseball History: 1992- Rochester third baseman Tommy Shields went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to lead the Red Wings to a 9-5 victory over Syracuse at MacArthur Stadium. Pitcher Anthony Telford picked up his fifth victory of the season, tying him for the IL lead.

This Day in IL Baseball History: 1998– Pete Rose, Jr. crushes the first pitch of the 5th inning over the left field wall in a game at Pawtucket, starting a rally of historic proportions for the Indianapolis Indians. The 10-run inning also includes a two-run homer by Guillermo Garcia, a three-run homer by Jason Williams, and a grand slam by Glenn Murray. Historians believe it is the first time in professional baseball history that a team “homered for the cycle” in a single inning. The 5th-inning outburst carries the Tribe to an 11-4 triumph and helps pitcher Jesus Martinez earn the victory in front of his older brother Pedro, who made the trip down from Boston before making the start later that night at Fenway Park.
