Chiefs split doubleheader with Yankees

Syracuse wins 3-1, loses 1-0
August 12, 2012
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, split a doubleheader with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Sunday from Alliance Bank Stadium. The Chiefs claimed the opener, 3-1, before falling, 1-0, in the nightcap.

In the first game, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (68-54) got on the board first thanks to second baseman Corban Joseph. He blasted a solo home run off of Yunesky Maya as the second batter of the game, giving the Yankees an early 1-0 lead.

But Maya would settle down from there. He retired the next 10 batters he faced and allowed just three hits and one run in five innings. Maya walked none and struck out one in the game.

Meanwhile, Syracuse (60-63) backed him up offensively. In the second inning, Carlos Rivero singled to lead off the frame against Yankees right-hander Adam Warren, before Mark Teahen reached on a fielder's choice ground ball, with Rivero forced out at second base. After Zach Walters struck out and Teahen stole second, second baseman Jarrett Hoffpauir singled to right-center field. That scored to Teahen to tie the game at one.

Teahen then delivered in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Jim Negrych walked before Corey Brown and Rivero singled to load the bases. Teahen then blooped an 0-1 pitch into short left field for a two-run single, giving the Chiefs a 3-1 lead.

After Maya shut down the Yankees for five innings, closer Christian Garcia tossed two scoreless innings to shut the door. Garcia has not allowed an earned run in 19.1 consecutive innings.

In the second game, Joseph put the Yankees on the board once again. He crushed a solo homer to right field off of starter Mitch Atkins in the third inning, putting the Yankees on the board. The home run, Joseph's 10th of the season, gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre its only run of the game.

The Chiefs' best rally came in the sixth innings against Yankees reliever Manny Delcarmen. Center fielder Eury Perez led off with a single before Negrych was retired on a sacrifice bunt. Hoffpauir then singled to left field, with Perez having to hold at third base. Delcarmen followed by striking out Rivero and Jesus Valdez, though, and the inning came to an end.

Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will conclude their three-game series on Monday night at 7:00. Left-hander John Lannan is scheduled to pitch for the Chiefs against Yankees left-hander Mike O'Connor.
