Childers Strikes Bird with Full Count Pitch

That was the case in the bottom of the 11th inning of the second game between the Bisons and the Bulls when Buffalo's Ramon Vazquez struck out on a very fowl play. With two outs of a 2-2 tie, the infielder swung and missed at a pitch that never quite reached the strike zone...because the ball struck a bird.

Reliever Jason Childers was on the mound for the Bulls and he threw a full-count pitch low and inside. The ball was a few feet in front of home plate when it hit a seagull just as the bird flew across Vazquez ( WATCH THE PLAY). The ball then skipped towards the Durham dugout and a surprised Vazquez headed to first base. Bulls' catcher Kevin Cash recovered in time to throw him out for what both sides thought was the final out of the inning.

The Durham fielders left the field, but the umpires held a conference and decided the at-bat should continue. Moments after Bisons' catcher Einar Diaz carefully picked up the bird and carried it to safety, the Bulls retook the field defensively.

Two pitches later, Vazquez grounded out just in front of the home plate.

As play resumed, the bird was taken the Dunn Tire Park service entrance where it was placed on a loading pallet. After taking roughly thirty minutes to regain composure, the seagull flew away under its own power.

Prior to his release, ballpark security charged the seagull for trespassing in a no-fly zone.
