Cofield named South SL All-Star Game starter

M-Braves pitcher replaces Barons' Ely as starter

HOOVER, Ala. - The Barons announced on Thursday that Gadsden native Kyle Cofield will be the starting pitcher for the South Division when the Southern League All-Star Game returns to Birmingham on Monday, July 13.

Cofield, who finished the season's first half at 5-2 with a 3.14 ERA, will replace Barons starting pitcher John Ely. The 2005 graduate of Southside High is scheduled to pitch one inning in the game. He will oppose Carolina hurler Travis Wood,who will be taking the mound first for the Northern squad.

An eighth round selection of the Braves in 2005, Cofield earned his second-straight All-Star appearance after a strong first half. He also earned the honor in the Carolina League last season.

John Ely will be unavailable to pitch in the All-Star Game due to his start on Friday night.
