Corey Brown Lights Up The Night

May 8, 2009
Corey Brown "delivered" again, leading the Rockhounds to a 14-2 win over the Corpus Christi Hooks Thursday night. Corey hit a pair of home runs and added a double, with four RBI as the 'Hounds busted loose against a Hooks club which had won four straight games, allowing a total of four runs in the those games.

Brown's 3-hit game extended a remarkable hit sreak to four games. Remarkable? Corey is 10-for-17 with four home runs, two doubles and nine RBI in the 4-gamer.

Danny Putnam got the 'Hounds on the board, breaking out of a "mini-slump" of 0-for-7 in the series. His 2-run double in the first drove in the game's first runs.

After Archie Gilbert's sensational catch in deep center off the bat of Mark Ori denied a potential Corpus Christi threat in the second, Brown's first home run of the night made it 3-0 in the fourth. The 'Hounds led 6-2 in the seventh when Corey drove a 3-run home run to left.

Josh Donaldson then belted a 3-run home run in the eighth and the game was out of reach. Josh's home run came just moments after a bases loaded passed bal, or the 'Hounds catcher would have had a grand slam.

In addition to his great catch, Archie Gilbert had a 3-hit game, extending his on-base sreak to 13 games.

Jason Fernandez went 8.0 strong innings for his third win.

The RockHounds now have three hitters with more than 20 RBI ... Danny Putnam drove in three and now has 22 for the year, while Chris Carter and Tommy Everidge each drove in a run Thursday, and now have 26, tied for second in the Texas League.

San Antonio scored six runs in the ninth inning to defeat the RoughRiders at Frisco, so the 'Hounds lead in the South is back to 3-and-a-half games over Corpus Christi ... 4-and-a-half over Frisco and six over San Antonio (see above).

Friday's series wrap-up is a very intriguing pitching match-up, with RockHounds right-hander Travis Banwart facing Houston Astros right-hander Brandon Backe, who makes his second re-hab start for Corpus. Travis is now the TL's top pitcher (3-0, 1.69), while Backe tossed 5.0 shutout innings in his first re-hab appearance with the Hooks.
