At this time last year, Atlanta's Evan Gattis was a 25-year-old playing for Lynchburg in the Class A Advanced Carolina League. On Wednesday, the Texas-born slugger locked up a big league roster spot as the Braves' Opening Day backup catcher. Starting in left field before moving behind the plate, Gattis celebrated by slugging his sixth homer of the spring in Atlanta's loss to Washington. Gattis, who earned the sobriquet "El Oso Blanco" (The White Bear) while bashing 16 homers for the Aguilas de Zulia in 53 Venezuela Winter League games this offseason, is batting .357 in the Grapefruit League.
