Cubs Rally Leads to Victory

Smith homered in his second straight game
August 21, 2010
The Iowa Cubs turned a 3-0 deficit into a 4-3 win over the Nashville Sounds Saturday night at Principal Park.

Marquez Smith continued his tear, tying the game 3-3 with a three-run home run in the sixth inning. Nashville held a 3-0 lead until the homer. Bobby Scales hit Iowa's only other extra-base hit, a double in the fifth inning. It was Smith's second homer in as many games. He has now hit safely in 10 straight games.

Micah Hoffpauir drew a walk to lead off the eighth inning. Next batter Jason Dubois singled, moving Hoffpauir into scoring position. A wild pitch by Chuck Lofgren allowed Hoffpauir to score for the go-ahead run and 4-3 lead.

Nashville threatened in the top of the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out. Brian Schlitter was able to get out of the jam to pick up his team-leading 13th save.

Jeff Samardzija threw six innings, allowing three runs, four hits and one home run. Scott Maine (3-1, 3.51) picked up the win, pitching a scorless inning of relief. Nashville's Lofgren (7-8, 5.22) was tagged with the loss, allowing Iowa's go-ahead run.

The Cubs and Sounds play game two of this four-game series Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
