Delmarva Wins to Earn Series Split

Salisbury, MD - The Augusta GreenJackets fell behind 5-0 after three innings and never fully recovered, falling 9-4 in their series finale against the Delmarva Shorebirds as the Shorebirds salvaged the series split with their win on Saturday night.

The Shorebirds got on the board in the second inning on Jason Esposito's RBI single to take a 1-0 lead. In the third, Delmarva batted around to score four times and chase Augusta starter Paul Davis. The first of two Michael Ohlman sacrifice flies allowed the Shorebirds to double their lead. Mikey Planeta followed with a run-scoring single to make it a 3-0 game. Wynston Sawyer doubled home a pair to push Delmarva's lead to 5-0.

Davis (5-6) departed after the third, allowing five runs on eight hits and a walk in his three innings, striking out five. The three-inning start breaks a string of seven straight starts where Davis has thrown five or more innings.

The GreenJackets got a run back in the fourth on Brett Krill's RBI single, but stranded two more baserunners in a game where Augusta would strand ten on the basepaths. Though they won by five runs, the Shorebirds fared worse - leaving 13 men on in the series finale and a total of 42 stranded runners in the four-game set.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Shorebirds got two more back on Ohlman's second sacrifice fly and an Augusta fielding error to make it a 7-1 ballgame. Krill grounded into a fielder's choice in the sixth to bring home another GreenJackets run, but Augusta would again fail to add further runs in the inning.

The Shorebirds put the game away in the eighth on Planeta's RBI triple and Sawyer's RBI single on a night where both of those guys had three hits each.

In the ninth, Shawn Payne doubled home a pair of window-dressing runs to make it a 9-4 game, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.

Eduardo Rodriguez (5-6) got the win for the Shorebirds, firing five innings of one-run ball on three hits and a pair of walks while striking out five.

The GreenJackets travel back to Augusta and have Sunday off to recover from the long bus ride before opening a three-game series on Monday with the Lakewood BlueClaws. It'll be Lakewood's first appearance at Lake Olmstead Stadium since 2007. The opener will be a matchup of lefties as Edwin Escobar (5-7, 3.50) will face Lino Martinez (6-5, 5.95).
