Doubledays beat Scrappers in home finale

AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (39-27) closed out the home portion of their regular season schedule with a 4-0 win on Sunday night over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (29-36). The win gives the Doubledays a 24-14 record this summer at Falcon Park.

Three pitchers combined to limit the Scrappers to just three hits in Auburn's fifth shutout of the season. LHP Brett Mooneyham (2-2) got the start and set the tone by allowing just one hit over six innings to earn the win. RHP Michael Boyden allowed one hit over two innings and RHP Travis Henke gave up one hit in one inning.

The Doubledays offense got going in the second inning. Designated hitter Brandon Miller hit a double to center field to lead off the inning. He came around to score two batters later when catcher Craig Manuel singled to right. In the fourth Auburn added to its lead as LF Estarlin Martinez went yard for the fourth time this summer. His shot cleared the left field wall to put the Doubledays ahead 2-0.

The final two Auburn runs came in the fifth on four consecutive singles to begin the inning. Center fielder Narciso Mesa and SS Mike McQuillan got the first two hits and scored the two runs, while 2B Tony Renda and 1B Shawn Pleffner each picked up an RBI with their singles. In total eight of the nine batters in the Auburn lineup ended the night with a hit.

RHP Luis Morel (2-5) suffered the loss for Mahoning Valley. He threw 4.2 innings and allowed all four runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out three. RHP James Stokes and LHP Harold Guerrero combined to limit the Doubledays to one hit over the final 3.1 innings.

The Doubledays begin a season ending 10-game road trip on Monday August 27 in State College, PA against the State College Spikes. Auburn will send RHP Pedro Encarnacion (4-1) to the mound for his 11th start of the summer. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
