Doubledays earn comeback win over Jammers, 5-4

August 8, 2012

AUBURN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (29-19) rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull ahead of and eventually defeat the Jamestown Jammers (20-28) on Tuesday night, 5-4, in front of 1,542 at Falcon Park. The win improves the Doubledays record to 13-4 this summer in one-run games.

The three-run seventh inning rally came with Auburn trailing 3-2 entering the inning. With one out LF Jordan Poole got aboard because of a throwing error from 3B Matt Juengel. That proved costly as three consecutive singles followed, the last of which drove home Poole to tie the game at three. Then, with two in scoring position and two outs, 1B Shawn Pleffner delivered the knockout blow by doubling to the gap in right-center field, driving in both runners to give the Doubledays a 5-3 lead.

Jamestown made things interesting in the ninth when they loaded the bases with no one out. However, only one run wound up scoring in the inning because CF Juancito Martinez grounded into a double play, and RF Michael Main ended the game with a groundout to short.

The Jammers took an initial 2-0 lead in the top of the second. With two on and one out, catcher Jose Behar smacked a single up the middle that drove home SS Anthony Gomez from second. A second consecutive single, from 2B Rony Peralta, plated DH Cameron Flynn for the second run of the inning.

Auburn answered with one run in the bottom of the second. With runners on the corners and one out, a pitch got past Behar, allowing DH Wander Ramos to score from third. Each team added another run in the third. Jamestown scored on an RBI double from 1B Viosergy Rosa, while the Doubledays got their run thanks to a single to left by SS Mike McQuillan, which drove in CF Narciso Mesa from third.

RHP Robert Benincasa (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. RHP Pedro Encarnacion started for Auburn and ended up going six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits. Despite allowing the one run in the ninth, RHP Derek Self recorded his ninth save of the summer. LHP James Wright (1-3) got charged with the blown save and the loss for the Jammers. He allowed two unearned runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.

The Doubledays finish up their two-game series with the Jammers on Wednesday, August 8. Auburn will send LHP Nick Lee (1-0) to the mound for his seventh start of the year. He will take on RHP Drew Steckenrider (0-1) for Jamestown. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. It will be another "Make-a-Wish" Wednesday presented by Sugarman Law Firm.
