September 6, 2012

WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. - The Auburn Doubledays (46-30) closed out the regular season on Wednesday night with an 8-4 loss to the Williamsport Crosscuters (30-46). The Doubledays finished their season series with the Crosscutters with a 5-5 split.

It was a six-run third inning that handed the game to Williamsport. The Crosscutters sent 10 men to the plate in the inning, collecting the six runs on six hits, a walk, and a hit batter. Of the six hits, two were doubles and the rest singles. Five of the hits drove in at least one run, and one drove in two. Everyone in the Crosscutters lineup wound up reaching base at least once throughout the game.

The six-run third broke open what was a 1-1 ballgame. Auburn scored the first run in the top of the second. Right Fielder Wander Ramos led off with a single to left. That was followed by a single to center field by 1B Carlos Lopez, which advanced Ramos from first to third. Ramos scored when SS Carlos Alvarez hit a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the inning Williamsport collected its first run thanks to a throwing error by Doubledays starter RHP Ivan Pineyro (3-2). Pineyro tried to throw out 3B Mitch Walding at first after he laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw sailed over the head of Lopez, allowing LF Larry Greene to score from third.

Each team scored one run again in the sixth. For Auburn 3B Mike McQuillan led off with a single on a fly ball to center field. A throwing error by RHP Nicholas Hanson on a pickoff attempt at first allowed McQuillan to advance from first to third. McQuillan scored from third on a groundout to short. In the bottom of the inning CF Jiandido Tromp got to second because of a throwing error to first by Doubledays catcher Andruth Ramirez. Tromp scored from second on a single up the middle by RF Cameron Perkins.

The final two Auburn runs came in the eighth. First CF Narciso Mesa hit a one-out double to right. That was followed by a triple off the bat of McQuillan, his fifth of the summer. McQuillan scored when LF Estarlin Martinez grounded out to short.

Pineyro wound up with the loss for the Doubledays. He went 2.2 innings and gave up seven earned runs on nine hits. RHP Jeb Stefan (2-4) got the start and win for Williamsport. He pitched five innings, surrendering one earned run on three hits while striking out six.
