Doubledays Fall in Speedy Season Finale

Batavia, NY - In the fastest nine-inning game the Auburn Doubledays have played in this year, the Batavia Muckdogs defeated Auburn 4-2 in one hour and fifty-two minutes in front of 801 fans at Dwyer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The loss leaves the Doubledays with a 45-30 record as they enter post-season play on Tuesday in Vermont.

Sunday's game belonged to Batavia, who grabbed an early lead against Auburn starter Wirkin Estevez and never let it slip away.

After Vance Albitz was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the first, Romulo Ruiz doubled him in to give the Muckdogs the early one-run lead.

The lead increased to three in the second, as Batavia plated two runs on three hits, including an RBI bunt single by Albitz, putting Batavia ahead 3-0. Another run came home in the fifth on an RBI triple by Jeremy Patton, and the Muckdogs had a four-run lead over the Doubledays.

Auburn didn't get on the board until the eighth inning when Connor Rowe blasted his second home run of the season over the wall in rightfield. The Doubledays added another in the ninth when Russell Moldnhauer doubled in Matt Skole. Unfortunately, Moldenhauer was thrown out at third base, trying to advance on a bobble, that ended the ballgame.

Despite the loss, the Doubledays will still advance to the New York-Penn League Playoffs when they meet the Vermont Lake Monsters. Game one is slated for Tuesday, September 6th in Vermont with games two and three to follow on Wednesday and Thursday at Falcon Park in Auburn.
