Doubledays win pitchers duel 2-1 over Jammers

July 3, 2012

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Auburn Doubledays (10-5) limited the Jamestown Jammers (5-10) to three hits on Monday night, en route to a 2-1 win at Russell Diethrick Park. The win improves the Doubledays record to 7-2 in one run games this season.

Both Auburn runs came in the top of the fourth. With one out 1B Shawn Pleffner doubled to left field. The next hitter, CF Angelberth Montilla, singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw home by Jamestown CF Juancito Martinez. However, Pleffner had held up at third, so when catcher Jose Behar received the throw from Martinez, he tossed it to SS Austin Nola covering the bag at second to try and get Montilla. Behar's throw went over the head of Nola though, allowing Pleffner to score from third and put Auburn ahead 1-0.

Third baseman Carlos Alvarez advanced Montilla from second to third with a groundout to first. Then, RF Wander Ramos brought Montilla home with a slow roller down the third base line that Ramos beat out for an infield single. That put the Doubledays ahead 2-0 and gave Ramos his third RBI of the season.

Jamestown climbed back within one in the sixth when the leadoff hitter in the innining, Martinez, was walked. He stole second when DH Yefri Perez was at the plate. Perez ended up grounding out to third, pushing Martinez over to third. Martinez scored on an RBI groundout to short by 3B Pedro Mendoza.

It was RHP Brian Rauh who gave up the run to the Jammers in the sixth. Rauh pitched four innings in relief to get his second save of the season. In total he allowed the one run on one hit and two walks while striking out two. Starting and getting the win for Auburn was LHP Blake Monar (1-1), who tossed five scoreless innings allowing just two hits and walking two while striking out four. RHP Matt Milroy (0-2) took the loss as he gave up two runs on four hits and one walk.

The Doubledays and Jammers conclude their three game series on Tuesday, July 3. Auburn will send RHP Taylor Jordan (0-0) to the mound for his fourth start of the year. He will square off against RHP Helpi Reyes (0-0) for Jamestown. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
