Eight Kings Named to '09 All-Star Game

LumberKings host 2009 Midwest League All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 23
June 5, 2009

Clinton, IA - When the best of the West Division meet the stars from the East Division at Alliant Energy Field on Tuesday, June 23, eight players suiting up for the West will be from the host team, the Clinton LumberKings.

The Midwest League announced the rosters for the East and West Divisions for the 2009 Midwest League All-Star Game, hosted by the LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field. Outfielder Denny Almonte will start in the outfield for the West thanks to 10 home runs (third-best in the league) and 29 extra-base hits (also third-best).

Four LumberKings' position players will round out the reserves. Nate Tenbrink (.290, 11 doubles, 25 RBI), Terry Serrano (.237, 25 runs scored, 11 stolen bases) and Scott Savastano (.289, 27 runs scored, 19 RBI) will back up on the infield, while Kris Sanchez (.297, three home runs, 18 RBI) will be a designated-hitter.

Clinton's second-best pitching staff is also well-represented. Right-hander Brett Lorin might have a chance to start for the West. He's 4-2 this season and ranks first in the league in innings pitched (65.1 IP), second in strikeouts (69) and second in ERA (2.06). Fellow right-hander Aaron Pribanic (4-2, 2.60 ERA) also makes the West staff. His ERA is sixth-best in the league. At the back end of the bullpen is Kings' closer Ruben Flores, who's 7-for-9 in saves this year with a 2.96 ERA.

This marks the third-straight season the LumberKings have had at least eight All-Stars. Clinton sent eight to the 2007 All-Star Game in Geneva, Illinois (Kane County) and a franchise-record nine to last year's game in Midland, Michigan (Great Lakes).

The West will be lead by LumberKings' manager Scott Steinmann, pitching coach Lance Painter and hitting coach Jesus Azuaje in a new format for coaches. This season marks the first time that the host team's coaching staff will handle All-Star duties. The East will be managed by Mark Haley and his South Bend staff, the winners of the East Division last season.

The All-Star festivities begin with the Midwest League Skills Competition and Home Run Derby on Monday, June 22. The All-Star Game itself takes place on Tuesday, June 23 at 7 PM. For tickets or more information on the event, contact the LumberKings at 563-242-0727 or visit www.lumberkings.com.
