Error Leads to 14th Inning Loss

Augusta, GA - The Charleston RiverDogs took advantage of a pair of infield singles and the fourth Augusta GreenJackets error of the game to pick up a run in the 14th inning and earn a 4-3 win over the GreenJackets on Monday night. With the win, Charleston took three of four from the GreenJackets in the series.

Eduardo Sosa legged out a slow roller to short for an infield single to open the 14th inning. Ali Castillo tried to bunt him to second, but Andrew Berger's (0-3) throw to first pulled Carlos Willoughby off the bag and both runners were safe. A double play pushed the go-ahead run to third with two outs. Ben Gamel's second hit of the day - a flare past Berger that died in front of Tomlinson - brought home the go-ahead run.

With one out in the 14th, Brett Krill singled and broke up a double play to keep the GreenJackets in the game. Jeff Arnold flew out to end the game with the tying run at first as the RiverDogs held on for the one-run win. Fred Lewis retired three of the four he faced to earn his first professional save.

Charleston drew first blood, getting two runs on three hits in the first off Augusta starter Clayton Blackburn. Two of the three hits in the inning didn't leave the infield. An error and a pair of hits put runners at second and third with no one out when back-to-back groundouts by Gamel and Robert Refsnyder put the RiverDogs ahead 2-0. In the fifth, Gamel singled home Charleston's third run of the game to give the RiverDogs a 3-0 edge.

Blackburn would settle down and give the GreenJackets seven solid innings in yet another no decision. Four of Blackburn's last five starts have been no decisions. He allowed three runs - two earned - on eight hits and a walk while striking out seven.

The GreenJackets took Blackburn off the hook for the loss in the seventh, picking up three runs to tie the game. After Shawn Payne was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Devin Harris drilled a two-run homer - his second home run in as many nights and fourth this season - to cut Charleston's lead to a run. After Jose Flores tripled to center, Krill's double down the third-base line scored Flores to tie the game at three. Krill would be picked off second base and the inning ended with no further threats.

Augusta and Charleston both had many chances to lead the game late and into extra innings. Krill singled with one out in the ninth, but a double play right after that sent the game into extras. The RiverDogs' best chance came when they had runners at first and second with no one out in the 11th and still came up empty-handed. In the bottom of the inning, Augusta had the game-winning run at third with two outs and came up short. Charleston was retired in order only once in the ballgame while the GreenJackets went down in order just three times.

Nick Goody (1-1) struck out four in two scoreless innings of one-hit ball to get the win for Charleston.

The GreenJackets will travel north on Tuesday to open a four-game series with the Delmarva Shorebirds beginning Wednesday. Kyle Crick (5-6, 2.47) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the series opener and will face Williams Louico (0-4, 6.75).
