Fairel unhittable in six-inning stint

Lefty extends scoreless streak to start season to 11 1/3 frames
April 14, 2010
Matt Fairel is already showing the form that made him a Midwest League Midseason All-Star last year.

Fairel (2-0) didn't allow a hit or a walk while fanning five through six innings in Lynchburg's 5-3 victory over Salem on Wednesday. He hasn't given up a run in 11 1/3 innings to start the season.

The only blemish against Fairel was a fielding error by third baseman Jose Gualdron to lead off the second frame.

The Florida State product gave up three hits and three walks, fanning two, over 5 1/3 innings April 9 in his debut for the Hillcats, the Reds' new Class A Advanced affiliate. Lynchburg bested Frederick, 3-1.

Fairel went 8-5 with a 2.93 ERA over 19 starts in '09 for Dayton. He nabbed Midwest League Pitcher of the Week honors after striking out 12 batters in his third career start.

After being promoted to Class A Advanced Sarasota, he went 3-3 with a 3.24 ERA in eight games. After failing to pick up a win in his five August starts, Fairel nailed down two victories with scoreless outings for Florida State League Pitcher of the Week kudos to wrap up his season.

Gualdron did make up for his error Wednesday, amassing three doubles and scoring three times to lead the Hillcats' offense.

Mace Thurman allowed a run on a hit and a walk, but closed out the ninth for his third save.
