First-rounder Mahtook succeeds in AFL

Rays pick plates two, collects two hits in Surprise's 6-2 victory

Mikie Mahtook, Tampa Bay's first-round pick this year, plated two runs and had two hits to help pave the way for the Saguaros. In his first professional action, the Louisiana State University product is batting .263 (5-for-19) with a steal and five RBIs. Marlins outfielder Kevin Mattison also had two hits for Surprise, tripling and scoring twice out of the leadoff spot. D-backs prospect Adam Eaton went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored as the Rafters improved to 7-2. So far in the AFL, the 22-year-old outfielder is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with five RBIs and four steals in five games. Teammate Nolan Arenado was the only other player to have multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 and driving in a run. Robbie Grossman delivered three hits and fellow Pirates prospect Jarek Cunningham smacked a timely two-run double for the Solar Sox. Grossman doubled, singled twice and drew a base on balls in his six plate appearances. He is batting .325 through nine AFL games after completing his best season as a pro at Class A Advanced Bradenton. White Sox prospects Tyler Saladino and Brandon Short also had key RBIs.
