Fish net pitchers Flores, Castillo from Giants

San Francisco gets third baseman McGehee in swap for right-handers
December 19, 2014

An odd hour at the end of the week didn't prevent the Giants and Marlins from doing business together.

Depending on what time zone you were in, it was either late Friday night or very, very early Saturday morning when the clubs finalized a deal that sent pitching prospects Kendry Flores and Luis Castillo to Miami in exchange for big league third baseman Casey McGehee.

Juan C. Rodriguez of the Miami Sun Sentinel broke the news, and shortly after midnight ET the Giants announced the trade.

In Flores, formerly the Giants' No. 16 prospect, the Marlins get a right-hander who spent last season at Class A Advanced San Jose. The Dominican Republic native went 4-6 with a 4.09 ERA over 20 starts. In 105 2/3 innings, he racked up 112 strikeouts against 32 walks while finishing the year with a .249 opponents' average and 1.26 WHIP. Flores, who turned 23 three days before Thanksgiving, signed with the Giants as an international free agent on June 4, 2009.

Castillo, a fellow right-hander from the Dominican Republic, turned 22 on Dec. 12. He made 48 relief appearances at Class A Augusta in 2014, going 2-2 with a 3.07 ERA while converting 10 saves in 12 opportunities. Across 58 2/3 frames, he fanned 66 and walked 25, holding hitters to a .247 average and compiling a 1.38 WHIP.

McGehee, 32, appeared in 160 games for the Marlins last season, his sixth in the Majors. He batted .287/.355/.357 with four home runs and 76 RBIs. The Giants will be the sixth club he has played for since the Cubs drafted him in the 10th round of the 2003 Draft.
