Fisher Cats' Romero nets Star with one-hitter

New Hampshire's Davis Romero threw his first career shutout, a complete-game one-hitter, on Monday night as the Fisher Cats blanked Bowie, 9-0, at home.

Romero retired the first nine hitters he faced and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Tony Alvarez lined a single into right with one out to break up the bid. Alvarez was then thrown out stealing, and Romero retired the final seven batters to polish off his masterpiece and earn the MiLB.com Star of the Day.

The 23-year-old lefty issued one walk and struck out four. He has given up only seven earned runs in 31 innings over five starts to produce a 3-1 record and a stellar 2.03 ERA.

The nine-inning complete game was the second of the season in the Eastern League, with both belonging to the Fisher Cats. Michael MacDonald tossed a four-hit shutout against Connecticut on Friday.

Romero, who is just 5-foot-10 and 155 pounds, was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Panama in 1999. In his first six professional seasons, he accumulated a record of 26-16 with a 3.13 ERA. He had never thrown a complete game in 52 starts.
