Five Lookouts Selected as Southern League All-Stars

June 29, 2010

*UPDATE (7/9): SS Dee Gordon will not be able to participate in the Southern League All-Star Game; however, RP Jon Huber has been added to the North Division's roster.

Today, the Southern League announced the 2010 North Division All-Star team. Lookouts 3B Corey Smith, OF Trayvon Robinson, RP Kenley Jansen, SS Dee Gordon, and SP Jesus Castillo were all selected to represent the North Division; however, Castillo will not participate due to his recent promotion to AAA Albuquerque.

Smith will start at third base for the North Division. The 2000 first-round pick is batting .284 on the season with a team-leading 20 doubles and eight homers. He also leads the Southern League in RBIs with 57.

Robinson, rated by Baseball America as the ninth best prospect in the Dodgers organization this past preseason, has been selected as a utility outfielder for the North Division. The 22-year-old centerfielder has exhibited all-around skills, hitting .284 with 14 doubles, three triples, six homers, 31 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases (tied-4th in the Southern League), while playing solid defense.

Jansen, who was promoted to Chattanooga on May 15th, has dominated the Southern League since his arrival. In 15 games out of the bullpen, the big righty has gone 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA with six saves. In 19 innings, he has notched an astounding 31 strikeouts against only 10 hits and 13 walks. Jansen made the conversion from catcher to pitcher mid-season of last year and according to Baseball America has the best fastball among Dodger minor leaguers. The 22-year-old can speak five different languages and played catcher for Team Netherlands in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Gordon will represent the United States in the prestigious XM All-Star Futures Game in Anaheim, CA on July 11th and plans to play in the Southern League All-Star Game, provided his traveling plans permit him to do so. The speedy shortstop, who was tabbed as the number one prospect in the Dodgers organization by Baseball America this past preseason, is hitting .281 with 10 doubles, five triples, and two homers. He leads the Southern League with 28 stolen bases.

Castillo went 4-6 with a 2.64 ERA in 13 starts for the Lookouts before his promotion on June 23rd.

The 2010 Southern League All-Star Game is scheduled to be played on July 12th at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville, Alabama. Players were selected by a vote of Southern League field managers, radio broadcasters, general managers, and print media.
