Five Lookouts to Play in SL All-Star Game

Today, the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announced the North Division roster for the 2012 Southern League All-Star Game. Lookouts 3B Pedro Baez, OF Blake Smith, UTL IF J.T. Wise, RHP Ethan Martin, and RHP Matt Magill were each selected to participate in the game by vote of Southern League field managers, radio broadcasters, general managers, and print media.

Baez is currently batting .250 on the season with 12 doubles, three triples, three homers, 26 RBI, and 36 runs (t-3rd in the Southern League). Additionally, he has been exceptional at third base, only committing four errors on the season. Entering the season, he was listed superlatively by Baseball America for having the best infield arm and defense amongst prospects in the Dodgers organization. Baez was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Bani, DR in 2007.

Smith entered today second in the Southern League in runs with 36. He is hitting .273 with nine doubles, two triples, a team-leading seven homers, and 31 RBI. Also, he was named Southern League Player of the Week on May 21st. Smith was selected in the second round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft and entered the year ranked as the 30th best prospect by Baseball America.

Wise has served primarily as a first baseman for the Lookouts but has also played in two games as a catcher. He is currently hitting .278 with 20 doubles (2nd in Southern League), four homers, 27 RBI, and a .392 on-base percentage. Wise was selected in the fifth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma, where he earned the 2009 Johnny Bench Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher.

Martin, a first-round pick in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, has posted a 6-2 record with a 3.38 ERA this season. His six wins leads the Lookouts staff and puts him fifth in the Southern League in that category. Entering today's start, he ranked in the top five in the Southern League in batting average against, WHIP, and strikeouts. In 69.1 innings pitched, he has yielded 49 hits and 37 walks, while notching 66 strikeouts. Coming into this season, Baseball America had Martin ranked as the 17th best prospect in the Dodgers organization.

Magill, a two-time Southern League Pitcher of the Week this season, is 5-3 with a 3.38 ERA this season. In 58 innings of work, he has surrendered 48 hits and 33 walks against a league-leading 71 strikeouts. Magill was selected in the 31st round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out Royal High School (Simi Valley, CA).

The 2012 Southern League All-Star Game will be played at Smokies Park in Kodak, TN on June 19th. All players on Southern League rosters as of May 17th were eligible for the voting.

The Lookouts will hit the road to play 10 games in 11 games against the Montgomery Biscuits and Jackson Generals before the Southern League All-Star break. The Lookouts will be back at AT&T Field on June 21st to play a five-game series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
