Five-Run Fifth Leads to 7-1 Win

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets sent eight to the plate to score five times in the fifth inning and never looked back on Sunday afternoon. Augusta's 7-1 win over the Charleston RiverDogs ends the six-game GreenJackets losing streak - the longest such streak for the GreenJackets this season - and gives the GreenJackets a chance to salvage the series split on Monday.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, the GreenJackets got a leadoff single from Kelby Tomlinson to open the inning. Jesus Galindo tried to bunt Tomlinson into scoring position, but the throw to first went wide of the bag and up the right field line. The speedy Tomlinson was off to the races, scoring all the way from first to tie the game on a play that sent Galindo to third. A wild pitch would later score Galindo to give the GreenJackets a 2-1 lead.

Shawn Payne restarted the threat with a single and Devin Harris made the RiverDogs pay right away. His two-run homer added a pair to Augusta's lead to put the GreenJackets on top by a 4-1 score. With one out in the inning, Brett Krill walked, took second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on the inning's third wild pitch to give the GreenJackets a 5-1 edge.

Augusta wasn't done, adding a pair in the sixth on a double play ball that brought home a run and a Jose Flores RBI single.

That was plenty of support for Edwin Escobar, who delivered one of his best performances of the season for the GreenJackets. In seven innings, Escobar (5-7) allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out seven. For Escobar, it's his second straight home win and the seventh time in his last eight starts where he's finished with six strikeouts or more.

Charleston got their only run off Escobar in the second inning, when a two-out double opened the door for Reymond Nunez's RBI double into right-center.

RiverDogs righty Bryan Mitchell was erratic through his five innings - walking four, hitting two batters and throwing four wild pitches. Mitchell (7-9) allowed five runs - three earned - on four hits while striking out three.

Derek Law threw two perfect innings to seal Augusta's first win since last Sunday and end the longest GreenJackets losing streak of the year.

The GreenJackets will try to salvage the series split in the series and homestand finale with Clayton Blackburn (6-3, 2.64) taking the ball against Matt Bashore (1-4, 4.61) on another Feed Your Face Monday.
