Former Pelican Ross Makes MLB Roster

Rangers' MiLB Pitcher-of-the-Year on Opening Day Roster
April 1, 2012
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - It's no April fool's, former Pelicans lefthander Robbie Ross has made the Texas Rangers 2012 Opening Day roster. The southpaw becomes the first Myrtle Beach player to make the Texas Rangers since the club became affiliated with the Rangers before the 2011 season.

Ross, named the Rangers 2011 Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year, was the only lefthander left among Texas' bullpen options after an injury to Neal Cotts Saturday. He was in camp this spring as a reliever after pitching as a starter with the Pelicans and Frisco RoughRiders last season. He was 10-5 with a 2.34 ERA across both levels.

Ross' roster spot is well deserved. The Kentuckian had a 1.64 ERA in eight Spring Training appearances, one of which was a start. He allowed just two runs, while striking out 10, in 10 innings of work. His eight outings were second most among Texas pitchers.

The Rangers now boast three former Pelicans on their roster. Ross is joined by Elvis Andrus and Matt Harrison, both Braves-era Pelicans. The duo moved to Texas via a trade in 2007.

Six Pelicans made their Major League debuts in 2011, four with the Braves and one with each the Pirates and Twins. Julio Teheran, Randall Delgado, Matt Young and Cory Gearrin all played in Atlanta. Teheran and Delgado are currently competing for Atlanta's fifth starter job. Scott Diamond, a Rule 5 Draft pick, debuted with Minnesota while Jeff Locke pitched with Pittsburgh as a September call-up.

Pelicans single game tickets, season tickets, flex Books and mini-plans for the 2012 season are now on sale at the Pelicans Ballpark offices or by calling (843) 918-6000. Normal box office hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 5pm and Saturday from 10am-2pm. Tickets are available anytime online at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com, powered by TicketReturn. The Pelicans open 2012 at home against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, Friday, April 6th, at 7:05 pm.
