Free agent Arias suspended 50 games

Dominican right-hander, 17, tests positive for Boldenone
April 16, 2012
NEW YORK -- Major League Baseball suspended right-hander Estarlin Arias on Monday after the free agent tested positive for a banned substance.

Arias, a 17-year-old from the Dominican Republic, received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for metabolites of Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

His suspension will be effective immediately upon his signing with a Major League organization. Arias has never appeared in a Minor League game and it's unclear whether he had previously signed with an organization.

Boldenone is an anabolic steroid initially developed for veterinary use. Arias is the second player to be suspended for using the substance this year and the 31st player overall to receive a ban in 2012.
