Frisco Beats Cards 6-1

April 7, 2012
Springfield, MO - A day after earning their first win of the season, the Springfield Cardinals had an opportunity to win their first series with a victory over Frisco Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals sent right hander, and Lee's Summit native, Trevor Rosenthal to the mound against righty Barret Loux, a former first round pick in 2010 out of Texas A&M.

After a two and a half hour rain delay, the Springfield Cardinals dropped the last game of the series 6-1 to fall to 1-2 on the season.

Brad Hawpe, former slugger for the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres, made his AA debut with Frisco going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs including a solo homer in the top of the second. Hawpe also added an RBI Sacrifice Fly in which Cards' centerfielder Oscar Tavares lost his footing on the warning track after making the circus catch to allow the speedy Leury Garcia on second to tag up and reach home.

Barret Loux (1-0) got the win for Frisco, striking out two Cardinals batters while giving up six hits and two walks in five innings of work. Springfield starter Trevor Rosenthal pitched four innings striking out four Frisco batters and walking one. His one earned run came on the second inning Hawpe home run. An unearned run came as a result of his own throwing error in the top of the 4th, after Hawpe's Sac fly brought in Garcia in from second.

Despite outhitting the RoughRiders 12-9, the Cardinals lone run came on a Jake Shaffer RBI double in the bottom of the 9th inning. Overall, the Cards were just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Springfield had seven different batters get hits, but could not get the big hits when they needed them. The Cards' best chance came in the bottom of the 2nd with two outs and the bases loaded for Shaffer, but Frisco Shortstop Jurickson Profar made a diving stop up the middle to steal a base hit from Shaffer and get the final out at second. Adam Melker added three hits for Springfield.

Frisco broke out with a three-run top of the 6th including a Jared Prince sacrifice fly and a two run Engel Beltre home run. Zach Zaneski added an insurance run in the top of the 8th with a one-out double to bring in Chris McGuiness from first base.
