G-Braves award grant to local library

Money will help fund reading program for children, families
January 10, 2013
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Gwinnett Braves have awarded their $1,000 grant for the month of December to the Friends of Gwinnett County Public Library (West Gwinnett Chapter), announced on Thursday, Jan. 10. The "Season of Giving" themed grant, aimed at organizations that benefit youth and education programming, will help fund the GCPL's Prime Time Family Reading Time, a literary program for children and their families.

To be presented in 2013 by the Norcross and Lilburn branches of the GCPL, the Prime Time Family Reading Time program supports intergenerational literacy and family bonding for 35 at-risk, bilingual families in Norcross. Prime Time emphasizes the importance of families reading together to discuss significant cultural and ethical themes. The six-week humanities based program includes reading, discussion and storytelling.

The grant money awarded by the Gwinnett Braves will be used by the GCPL to purchase 30 to 40 Spanish/English bilingual books, ranging from children's stories to how-to books to poetry. Each book purchased with help from the grant will feature a nameplate inside the cover recognizing the contribution of the Braves Foundation. Housed in the Norcross branch, these books will be accessible to all residents of Gwinnett County as a permanent part of the library's collection.

"I'd like to thank the Gwinnett Braves for what they've done for us and the Prime Time program," said Norcross branch librarian Karen Harris. "It has been a privilege working with the G-Braves on helping families across Norcross. What a great New Year's gift for everyone involved!"
