Corpus Christi (23-27) @ Arkansas (21-29)

The Hooks open a six-game road trip tonight with the first of three at Dickey-Stephens Park against the Arkansas Travelers.  The Hooks dropped Monday's home stand finale to Springfield 3-2, leaving the tying run stranded at third base in the ninth.  Despite losing two of three to the Cardinals, the Hooks were 4-2 on the home stand.  The Hooks enter play here tonight with wins in six of their last nine - and have won two of their last three on the road.

The Hooks swept the Travs last week in the series at Whataburger Field.  Arkansas, though, is coming off a series in which it won two of three at San Antonio.  The Travelers have won seven of their last 12 games.

Tonight's Matchup:
RHP Ross Seaton (4-3, 3.35) vs. RHP Matt Oye (1-2, 4.08)
Seaton, a third-round selection of the Astros in the 2008 draft, makes his 10th start for the Hooks and his second against the Travelers.  Last Friday at Whataburger Field, Seaton held the Travs to two runs on three hits and a pair of walks over seven innings in a 7-2 triumph.  He tied his season high with five strikeouts.  Seaton has worked his way to the top of the rotation in terms of status, and over his last six outings is 4-1 with a 2.50 ERA.  In that time, Seaton has limited the opposition to two or fewer earned runs in five of six starts.  Seaton led the Hooks and the Texas League with 28 starts last season, posting the second-highest single-season total in team history.  A valedictorian at Houston's Second Baptist High School his senior year, Seaton has not missed a turn in the rotation since July of 2009 when he pitched for Lexington - a span of 73 starts.

  • Has not allowed more than 4 earned runs in any of his 9 starts with the Hooks
  • Is 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in 6 road starts (2-1, 2.37 ERA in 3 home starts)
  • Made AAA debut with OKC April 22 vs. Albuquerque (4.2-7-6-5-2-1, ND)

Oye, signed by the Angels as a non-drafted free agent in April of 2009, makes his 17th appearance and first start for the Travelers tonight.  Oye has been pushed into service with RHP Eddie McKiernan, originally scheduled to start here tonight, getting the call to AAA Salt Lake.  Oye last pitched Saturday in San Antonio, allowing one hit and striking out one batter in his two-thirds of an inning of relief.  Oye's longest outing this year was his first appearance of the season, April 6 versus Midland, when he went 2.2 innings and 36 pitches.  Oye did make nine starts last year split between the top three clubs in the Angels' chain.  His most recent start came last September 1 for the Travelers at Northwest Arkansas (5.0-6-2-1-3-3, L).  Oye pitched briefly over two seasons at Washington State (2005-06), going 0-1 with a 5.75 ERA in 14 games and 4 starts.

  • Has not allowed a run in his last 3 appearances, covering 4.0 innings
  • Appeared in relief against the Hooks last Wednesday (2.0-2-0-0-0-1
  • Currently second on the Travs' staff with 4 saves

Singleton TL Player of the Week
Hooks 1B/LF Jon Singleton has been chosen as the Texas League's Player of the Week for the period May 21-27.  Singleton, who had his 11-game hitting streak snapped Monday, batted .500 (12x24) this past week with 1 walk, 1 double, 4 HRs, 8 runs and 12 RBIs.  His recent RBI surge has moved him to third in the league in that statistical category.  Singleton knocked in 12 runs over six games in the just-concluded home stand and has 20 RBIs in the last 15 games.

Singleton becomes the third Hook this season to be so honored.  Outfielders Brandon Barnes and Jacob Goebbert shared the distinction in the extended opening week of the season.  Barnes was a repeat winner in week two.

Last season, Singleton was named the Florida State League Player of the Week (June 20-26) while with the Phillies in Clearwater.

Cosart scratched
RHP Jarred Cosart, originally scheduled to start tonight's game, has been scratched.  Manager Keith Bodie says that Cosart has been scratched for "not conforming to organizational policy."  The other starters in the rotation have been moved up and, with the off day, they'll all be on their regular schedule of pitching with four days rest between starts.  Seaton goes tonight, with RHP Jose Cisnero now on the docket tomorrow and LHP Brett Oberholtzer slotting in the series finale Friday.

Cosart is expected to rejoin the rotation Sunday in Springfield.

Bailey added to roster
Outfielder Adam Bailey joins the Hooks roster today.  Bailey, who broke camp with the Hooks and homered in the April 2 exhibition loss to the Astros, has been with Lancaster all season.  In 47 games with the JetHawks, Bailey was hitting .279 (50x179) with 13 doubles, 8 HRs and 25 RBIs.  He also had 2 stolen bases.

Bailey joined the Hooks late last season and hit .323 (30x93) with 7 doubles, 3 HRs and 15 RBIs.  A 23rd-round selection of the Astros in 2010 out of the University of Nebraska, Bailey was a combined .291-24-95 last year with Lexington, Lancaster and the Hooks.  His home run and RBI totals ranked second among all Astros farmhands.

Also today, RHP Chris Hicks was removed from Corpus Christi's disabled list and reassigned to AAA Oklahoma City.

Wikoff joins club; Steele released
Veteran outfielder T.J. Steele was released by the Astros following Sunday's game.  Steele had played in 26 games this season and was batting .141 (10x71) with 1 double, 1 triple, 2 HRs and 7 RBIs.  Over three seasons and 211 games with the club, Steele hit .212 (154x727) with 27 doubles, 8 triples, 15 HRs, 90 runs and 80 RBIs.  His 31 steals rank fifth all-time for the Hooks.

Steele didn't stay unemployed for long.  The San Diego Padres signed him to a free-agent contract yesterday and assigned him to San Antonio.  Steele is with the Missions for their series opener tonight in Springfield.

Infielder Brandon Wikoff made his Hooks debut Monday.  Starting at third and batting eighth in the order, Wikoff went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.  The versatile infielder appeared in 103 games last year for the Hooks and batted .308 with 3 HRs, 26 RBIs and 5 stolen bases.  Wikoff comes to Corpus Christi from extended spring training in Kissimmee, where he'd been working to rehab his injured left wrist.  Wikoff suffered the injury before spring training, then re-aggravated it in late March.

Martinez OB streak at 23
Hooks second baseman Jose Martinez has stretched his consecutive games on-base streak to 23.  During the streak, which began May 4 in Midland, Martinez is batting .352 and has an on-base percentage of .402.

His streak is the longest this season for a member of the club and is currently the second-longest active streak in the Texas League.  Frisco shortstop Jurickson Profar has reached base safely in 46 straight games.  Martinez now has the seventh-longest consecutive games on-base streak in team history.
