Martes among Pitcher of the Week winners

Astros' No. 3 prospect honored for seven one-hit innings with Hooks
August 1, 2016

Francis Martes was "a little bit out of control" last week, but it turned out to his advantage.

"He has the ability to do that," Corpus Christi pitching coach Dave Borkowski told MiLB.com. "I think they ran into a bit of a buzzsaw with the stuff he's got and as locked in as he was."

Martes and his buzzsaw earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the Texas League after holding San Antonio to one hit and a pair of walks over seven innings July 27. He tied a season high with nine strikeouts in his sixth win.

The Astros' third-ranked prospect retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced in the outing, allowing only a leadoff single in the fifth inning.

"The best combo I saw tonight was a couple good, hard sliders down and away with high fastballs," Borkowski said. "He finished about four batters that way, but he actually got strikeouts on all three pitches tonight, which is a huge plus."

Martes, a 20-year-old right-hander from the Dominican Republic, improved to 6-4 with a 3.76 ERA in his 19th outing. He's totaled 89 strikeouts to 39 walks over 88 2/3 innings this season with the Hooks and is holding opposing batters to a .230 average.

The award isn't the first for the righty, either -- last year he was named the California League's Pitcher of the Week and the circuit's Player of the Month in August after throwing consecutive seven-inning shutouts Aug. 17 and 24 for Class A Advanced Lancaster.

Martes originally signed with the Marlins but was traded at the deadline in 2014 to Houston as part of the deal that sent Jake Marisnick to Miami.
