Gennett ties 'Tees single-season hits mark

VIERA, Fla. -- Brevard County Manatees second baseman Scooter Gennett tied the franchise's single-season hits record of 167, after going 3-for-4 in Sunday's season finale against the Daytona Cubs. The record was set by Quincy Foster in 1999.

Gennett, both a FSL mid-season and post-season All-Star, finishes the 2011 season as the Florida State League's leader in hits. He is the first Manatee to lead the FSL in hits since Drew Anderson in 2005.

The Sarasota, Fla. native also finishes the season, tenth in the league with a .300 batting average and fifth with 226 total bases. He also led the league in at-bats (556) and tied for third in games played (134).

Gennett also had the third lowest total plate appearance-to-strikeout ratio in the Florida State League with one strikeout per every 8.88 plate appearances.

His 16-game hitting streak from April 21-May 7 tied him for the fourth longest hitting streak in the Florida State League in 2011. Gennett also reached base in 15 consecutive games from May 20-June 21.

Gennett's bat was hot in the second half of the season, as he hit .333 (93-for-279) from June 23 on. He has also racked up 44 multi-hit games in 2011.

Gennett was drafted in the 16th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Brewers out of Sarasota High School. Both Baseball America and MLB.com listed him as Milwaukee's fourth-best prospect heading into the 2011 season.

He will also be one of nine Brewers prospects that will be playing for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.
