Gilmartin traded to Twins for Doumit

The Twins already own one of the deeper farm systems in the game. They made it a little deeper Wednesday.

Minnesota acquired left-handed starter Sean Gilmartin from the Braves in a deal that sent Major League catcher Ryan Doumit to Atlanta.

Gilmartin, who was the Braves' No. 4 prospect at the time of the trade according to MLB.com, was a first-round pick (28th overall) out of Florida State University in the 2011 Draft. He spent most of the 2013 season at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he went 3-8 with a 5.74 ERA, 65 strikeouts and 33 walks in 91 innings over 17 starts. He missed almost two months of International League play with shoulder tendinitis, making four rehab starts in the Gulf Coast League and at Class A Rome before returning in August.

The 23-year-old utilizes a four-pitch mix and pitches mostly to contact (as seen by his 6.4 K/9 rate in Gwinnett). His changeup and slider are his best offerings and were both given 50 present grades and 60 future grades by MLB.com, while his fastball (50/50) and curveball (40/40) were given lower marks. He projects as a back-of-the-rotation starter in the Majors.

Gilmartin, who becomes Minnesota's No. 13 prospect and top left-hander, is expected to make his Twins debut at Triple-A Rochester and could be joined in the rotation there by Alex Meyer (No. 3) and Trevor May (No. 7).

Doumit featured in 135 games for the Twins in 2013, batting .247/.314/.396 with 14 homers and 55 RBIs while getting starts at catcher, right field and designated hitter. The Braves already employ Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird behind the plate, signalling that the team's acquisition was out of a need for more depth off the bench.
