Giolito, Schwarber lead Futures Game rosters

We talk about prospects in terms of the future because, well, that's what they represent -- the future. But for one night every summer, the future is allowed to be the present on one of the sport's biggest stages at the All-Star Futures Game, and now we know exactly how that "future" will look. 

Nationals top prospect (No. 4 overall) Lucas Giolito and Cubs No. 2 (No. 40 overall) Kyle Schwarber highlight the US Team Futures Game roster, as announced Thursday. Twins No. 4 (No. 26 overall) Jose Berrios and Royals top prospect (No. 33 overall) Raul Adalberto Mondesi lead the squad representing the rest of the world in this year's event to be held July 12 at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park. 

Giolito is the top prospect still left in the Minors with Byron Buxton (Twins), Carlos Correa (Astros) and Francisco Lindor each in the Majors. The 20-year-old right-hander, who has a killer fastball and curve in his arsenal, has a 3.71 ERA with 57 strikeouts and only 12 walks in 43 2/3 innings at Class A Advanced Potomac, after being held back at extended spring training to start the season. He'll seek better returns at this year's Futures Game after serving up a homer to Javier Baez at the 2014 event in Minnesota. 

He could pair up as a battery with Schwarber, who notably played six games with the Cubs recently before being sent to Iowa for his Triple-A debut. The fourth overall pick in last year's Draft has a .313/.431/.567 line with 13 homers in 59 games in the Minors and impressed in his short Major League stint as well, going 8-for-22 (.364) with a homer and a triple.

On the international side, Berrios might be the biggest name fans could see on the mound for the World Team. The 21-year-old right-hander is 7-3 with a 3.23 ERA and 86 strikeouts in 83 2/3 frames for Double-A Chattanooga. In a Twins system stocked with talent, he's the organization's second-ranked pitching prospect behind only Alex Meyer. 

Mondesi, the son of the similarly named 1994 Rookie of the Year, has held his own as just a 19-year-old in the Texas League, hitting .270/.289/.426 with four homers and six steals while providing plus defense at shortstop for Double-A Northwest Arkansas. 

Cincinnati fans will be able to see their own prospects in left-handed pitcher Amir Garrett (US), outfielder Kyle Waldrop (US) and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez suit up next month in what they hope will be their future home stadium.
