Goeddel, Cave lead Rule 5 selections

Pair of outfielders will try to catch on with Phillies, Reds in 2016
December 10, 2015

Just another day of player movement at this year's Winter Meetings. At least this one was expected -- it was on the schedule.

The Rule 5 Draft was held Thursday morning in Nashville on the last day of the Winter Meetings. Rays outfielder Tyler Goeddel and Yankees outfielder Jake Cave were the first two selections and will head to the Phillies and Reds, respectively, in attempts to stick on both clubs' Major League rosters for the entire 2016 season.

A quick reminder on the machinations of the Rule 5 Draft: players that are not on their club's 40-man rosters and have been in pro ball for four years or more after signing at 19 or older or have been in pro ball for five years or more after signing at 18 or younger are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft. Teams pay $50,000 to make a selection in the Rule 5 Draft and, in so doing, must keep the player on their 25-man roster (or disabled list with at least 90 days being active) for the duration of the following season or else they are offered back to their original clubs. Eleven Rule 5 players stuck with their new clubs in 2015, but only three did the year before that, so results can vary.

Here are the results from the Major League, Triple-A and Double-A portions of this year's Rule 5 Draft. (Note: clubs are allowed to pass on making selections, and those that did so were not included in the table below.)
