Lefty allows five hits, four runs in rehab start
June 13, 2011
Lefty Tom Gorzelanny and the Syracuse Chiefs (26-36), the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, fell 8-3 to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees (34-28) Monday at Alliance Bank Stadium . The Yankees scored four runs off Gorzelanny in a four-inning rehab start, all of them coming in the third frame. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out three, and the Chiefs couldn't rally for the win after his departure.

Gorzelanny started the game with a strikeout and allowed only gave up a double in his first two scoreless innings. His counterpart for the Yankees, righthander George Kontos, was also dealing to start the game. He retired the first 10 batters he faced and got some run support with the four-run third.

Gorzelanny struck out Greg Golson to start the frame, but Gustavo Molina started the Yankees run with a one-out single. The Chiefs lefty then hit Austin Krum in the arm with a pitch, followed by a Ramiro Pena RBI-single that put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre up 1-0. The heavy damage came, though, in the next at-bat when Jesus Montero stepped to the plate and whacked a three-run homer over the rightfield wall.

The Chiefs finally got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff groundout by Matt Antonelli, Gregor Blanco blasted his second homer of the season to pull Syracuse within 4-1.

The Chiefs crept a little closer in the fifth once Kontos exited. Syracuse designated hitter Michael Aubrey led off with a double to right, and Yankees reliever Andrew Brackman hit Jesus Flores in the back to put runners on first and second. Rightfield Jesus Valdez then looped an RBI-single just inside the rightfield line that moved Flores to third. Brackman did get three straight outs to end the inning, but one of them came on a deep Corey Brown sacrifice fly that put the score at 4-3.

The Yankess added an insurance run in the sixth off Syracuse reliever J.D. Martin. A one-out single and stolen base by Jordan Parraz allowed him to score on Greg Golson's RBI-double.

The Chiefs threatened to even the game multiple times the rest of the game but stranded six runners in the next three innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Flores left the bases loaded by grounding into an inning-ending double play. In the seventh, Chris McConnell looked like he would score from second on a Matt Antonelli single, but he was tagged out to end the frame on the throw from the centerfielder Golson. And in the eighth, Yankees reliever Eric Wordekemper dealt a two-out strikeout to Flores with runners on first and second to halt the Syracuse rally.

While the Chiefs floundered with runners on, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre extended their lead in the top of the ninth. Kevin Russo and Golson started the frame with a double and single to get on second and third. Molina then bounced a single over Tug Hulett at third base and both runners scored to give the Yankees an 8-3 lead.

Lee Hyde relieved Martin after that and got two straight outs on a fielder's choice grounder and a strikeout. But the Yankees would add one more with Ryan Tatusko on the mound with a Jorge Vazquez RBI-single.

The Chiefs never got anything started in the bottom of the frame as Wordekemper retired three straight batters to end the game. Syracuse and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre will resume their four-game series Tuesday at 7:00. Southpaw Ross Detwiler will take the mound for the Chiefs against Yankees righty Adam Warren.
