Grandal, Gyorko in midseason form

San Diego prospects Yasmani Grandal and Jedd Gyorko soon could have the chance to lock up two key positions in the Padres infield for years to come.

On Thursday, they gave the Friars faithful in Tucson, Ariz., a glimpse into the team's future.

The duo combined for seven hits, seven RBIs and four runs as the Padres beat the Colorado Rockies, 11-6, in a split-squad contest.

Grandal, ranked as the Padres' No. 4 prospect, went 3-for-3 with a homer, five RBIs and a walk batting fifth, while Gyorko -- one spot lower on MLB.com's Top 20 list -- collected four hits, three runs and a pair of RBIs out of the No. 2 spot.

Switch-hitting Grandal pulled an RBI single to left field in the first inning off Colorado starter Guillermo Moscoso (0-2), and he reached on a walk in the third. In the fourth, Grandal -- batting from the right side -- took Carlos Torres deep over the 32-foot green batting eye in dead center field for a three-run blast, his first long ball of the year.

"I didn't know I could hit the ball that far," Grandal told MLB.com. "It was a fastball right down the pike. I've still got a long way to go, but I'm almost there. You can throw me as many fastballs as you want on a 3-2 count, and I'm going to keep fouling them off until I hit one."

Grandal, acquired in the five-player deal that sent pitcher Mat Latos to Cincinnati in December, then recorded a two-out RBI single off Torres in the fifth before being replaced an inning later.

The backstop's strong performance gave him his second multi-hit game in three appearances and raised his average to .346. His five RBIs more than doubled his total of four from his previous 10 games.

Not to be outdone, former second-rounder Gyorko singled in the first, second and fourth. He added an RBI double in the fifth and was called out on strikes in his final at-bat in the seventh.

In 18 Cactus League games, the third base prospect is batting .323, despite entering the contest in a 6-for-26 (.231) skid.

San Diego's Casey Kelly improved to 2-0 despite allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings. He fanned four batters after surrendering a leadoff homer to Eric Young.

Kelly and Grandal may form a battery for the Triple-A Tucson Padres when camp breaks in two weeks.
