Gyorko's slam highlights Spring debuts
Padres top prospect Jedd Gyorko hit a grand slam off Hector Noesi in his first at-bat of the spring to lead San Diego past its co-tenant at the Peoria Sports Complex.
Gyorko also lined to center field and struck out after getting the start at second base, where he is battling Logan Forsythe for the Opening Day job. He batted .311 with 30 homers and 100 RBIs last season while playing second and third base at Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A Tucson.
Adys Portillo, the Padres' No. 6 prospect, allowed one run on two hits and a walk with one strikeout over two innings out of the bullpen.
Mike Zunino and Nick Franklin -- the Mariners' No. 3 and 4 prospects respectively -- both went 0-for-1. Gameday box score
Royals 5, Rangers 5
The Cactus League opener for both teams was a rather forgettable one for prospects. Texas' Jurickson Profar, MLB.com's top overall prospect, went 0-for-2 and committed an error after replacing Elvis Andrus at shortstop. No. 22 overall prospect Mike Olt, who started at third base, went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts, and Rangers No. 19 prospect Leury Garcia went 0-for-3 as a replacement for second baseman Ian Kinsler.
Royals No. 3 prospect Yordano Ventura surrendered two earned runs -- both on a homer by Nelson Cruz in the fourth inning -- and three hits in 1 2/3 innings. Gameday box score
Indians 11, Reds 10
Mike McDade, who was claimed off waivers by the Indians in November, made a good first impression by hitting a walk-off three-run double. The 23-year-old batted .285 with 17 homers and 67 RBIs between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas a season ago.
Reds No. 3 prospect Tony Cingrani got the start but was roughed up for three runs on three hits and a walk in one inning. Giovanni Soto fared no better for the Tribe, surrendering five runs on three hits and two walks while retiring only two batters. Gameday box score
Tigers 2, Braves 1
Tigers No. 6 prospect Tyler Collins tripled, doubled, scored a run and made a diving catch for the defending American League champions.
No. 16 prospect Jeff Kobernus delivered an RBI triple and scored a run for the Tigers, while No. 15 prospect Kenny Faulk struck out two in a spotless eighth inning to preserve a two-run lead.
Joey Terdoslavich -- the Braves' No. 15 prospect -- helped the home team avoid the shutout with a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. Gameday box score
