Halama Masterful in 1-0 win

PawSox held to just three hits
August 16, 2008
The script was completely different for the Bisons, but the end result was just as impressive.

A night after exploding for a huge 14-7 victory over the Rochester, the Herd shutdown and shutout the Pawtucket Red Sox, 1-0, Saturday night in front of 15,182 at Dunn Tire Park. John Halama dominated for seven innings and received help from three Buffalo relievers to complete a three-hit masterpiece.

Halama was outstanding all night. The veteran southpaw allowed just four base runners and one was on a Bisons' fielding error. Joe Thurston singled in the first inning and was the only PawSox to get into scoring position against Halama. Thurston singled again the third and former Bison Keith Ginter walked in the sixth. But that was it for Pawtucket as Halama retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced.

Halama improved to 4-0 at Dunn Tire Park and 8-4 on the season with the team. He leads Buffalo in wins.

Three Bisons relievers kept the shutout intact. Tom Mastny got one out in the eighth inning before giving way to Rich Rundles. The side-winding All-Star got two outs on one pitch, getting Thurston to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 doubleplay.

Bubbie Buzachero worked a scoreless ninth for his sixth of the season. He needed just seven pitches to close out the win.

The Herd got the only run they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Trevor Crowe doubled to lead off the inning and Todd Linden cashed him in with a two-out double of his own.

Linden has now hit in eight straight games, averaging .367. He has driven in four runs in the three games this homestand.

BISONS NOTES Andy Cannizaro extended his hit streak to nine games after going 1-3 with a single...Rich Rundles has allowed just five of his 24 inherited runners to score this season (21%)...Buffalo is 8-5 against Pawtucket this season.
