Hammerheads Struggles Continue

JUPITER, FL- The Daytona Cubs defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads this evening at Roger Dean Stadium by a score of 7 to 3. The Hammerheads have struggled of late, and have dropped 6 of their last 10 games. Hammerheads starter Derell McCall cruised through the 1st 5 innings, but pitched into trouble in the 6th. McCall allowed a string of hits in a row, which led to a 6 run 6th for Daytona. McCall (1-1) suffered the loss, and allowed 3 earned runs, along with 9 hits, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. Relievers Jay Buente and Kurt Koehler helped stop the bleeding, and they combined to allow no earned runs over 3 2/3 innings.

Jupiter struggled offensively, and they were not able to get the hits they needed with runners in scoring position. Left fielder Dante Brinkley led the offensive attack for Jupiter, going 1 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBI's. The home run was Brinkley's 1st of the season. Center fielder Gregory Burns continues to be 1 of Jupiter's hottest hitters, going 1 for 2 with a run scored and 2 walks.

The Daytona Cubs are 1 of the hottest teams in the Florida State League and are currently on a 4 game winning streak. The Cubs are 7 and 3 in their last 10 games. Daytona starter James Russell got his 1st win of the season, pitching 5 1/3 innings and allowing 2 earned runs, 4 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 2. Cubs shortstop Darwin Barney was 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. 1st baseman Blake Lalli also had a strong outing, going 2 for 5 with an RBI.

The teams will square off tomorrow in game 2 of the series at Roger Dean Stadium. Right-hander Kyle Winters will make the start for the Hammerheads, and he will be opposed by Adam Harben. In 4 starts with Jupiter this season, Winters is 2 and 0 with a 1.54 ERA. His counterpart is 1 and 2 with a 3.65 ERA. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM.
