Harper, Profar honored by Sally League

Augusta's Sanford named top pitcher, postseason All-Star
August 30, 2011
His time in the South Atlantic League may have been brief, but Bryce Harper made an impact on not only the fans but most everyone involved in the league.

The circuits' managers, general managers and media members voted to select Harper as the league's Most Outstanding Major League Prospect on Tuesday as the Sally League's postseason All-Stars and award winners were announced.

Harper, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2010 Draft, batted .318 with 82 hits, 14 home runs, 46 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 72 games before being promoted to Double-A Harrisburg. He was a mid-season All-Star and SAL Player of the Week on May 9 as well.

Hickory Crawdads shortstop Jurickson Profar, a Futures Game All-Star this summer, was selected as the league's Most Valuable Player. The Curacao native is batting .285 with 11 homers and 61 RBIs in 109 games.

The league's top pitcher, according to voters, was Shawn Sanford of the Augusta GreenJackets. The New Jersey native was named as the Most Outstanding Pitcher after going 10-9 record and a 2.47 ERA in 29 games.

Profar anchors an All-Star infield that includes Rome catcher Evan Gattis, Kannapolis first baseman Dan Black, Hickory second baseman Odubel Herrera and Augusta third baseman Adam Duvall. A second Crawdad, Christian Villanueva, made the squad as a utility infielder.

A pair of 2010 first-round picks -- the Marlins' Christian Yelich and the Rockies' Kyle Parker -- joined Greenville's Brandon Jacobs and Kannapolis Brady Shoemaker in the outfield. Lakewood's Jim Murphy made the team at designated hitter.

Ryan Ellis and Glenn Abbott of the Savannah Sand Gnats were voted as the top manager and coach, respectively. The All-Star team was voted on by the 14 South Atlantic League team's managers, general managers, local reports and team radio broadcasters for a total of 56 votes. The full roster is below:
