Harvey, Myers named stars of the game
Myers and Harvey showed off their talents enough to be named PCL and IL stars of the game respectively at the 25th annual Triple-A All-Star Game Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field.
Myers, 21, represented the Omaha Storm Chasers (who are affiliates of the Kansas City Royals) in the one-night event. Harvey, 23, represented the hometown Buffalo Bisons.
"I felt good out on the mound tonight," Matt Harvey said. "I had to shake off the rust since I haven't pitched in a week but it was good to be in the mound for two innings."
Myers had a good night at the plate. The young outfielder went 2-3 at the dish with a double, RBI and a run scored.
Myers' RBI single in the first gave the PCL the early 2-0 lead. The Storm Chaser also was part of the PCL's scoring efforts in the fourth. Myers doubled to lead off the inning, then came around to score on an RBI double by Tim Federowicz.
"I had to focus staying the other way, and hit a pitch over the plate and get a hit in the middle," Myers said. "I was trying to shake off the difference in pitchers in from the past days to develop something in my first at-bat."
Myers' numbers so far this season for Omaha? A .315 average, with 14 homers and 42 runs batted in. Myers came into the All-Star game coming back from a trip to Kansas City, where he participated in the All-Star futures game on Sunday.
As for Harvey, the righty continued the dominance he showcased during the first half of the season.
Harvey went on to toss two scoreless innings of work in relief of IL starter Tyler Cloyd. In those two innings, Harvey struck out two batters and didn't allow a hit.
"I tried to keep the hitters I faced off balance and throw them a mix of change-ups," Harvey added. "It gave me the confidence to come back behind the count to get the outs."
PCL manager Marty Brown had nothing but promise for Myers, who expects big things from the young outfielder.
"Myers is just extremely talented; he doesn't get rattled," PCL Manager Marty Brown said. "He has ice in his veins and patience at a good level; he's going to be good."
IL manager Mike Sarbaugh did the same for Harvey, who sees his stay with Buffalo not lasting long.
"(Matt) Harvey was good I enjoyed watching him on the mound," IL manager Mike Sarbaugh said. "His ability to make his pitch speed dial up into the 90's is incredible."
The PCL would end up winning the game 3-0, snapping a three-game losing streak to the IL that dates back to 2009.
