Hernandez, Lara combine on one-hitter

The High Desert Mavericks put 23 balls in play on Friday night. Thanks to Pedro Hernandez and Robert Lara, only one of them got through the Lake Elsinore Storm defense.

Hernandez matched his longest outing of the season and combined with Lara on a one-hitter as the Class A Advanced Storm rolled to an 11-0 rout of the Mavericks.

Hernandez (5-0) struck out two over six innings in his sixth start. He gave up High Desert's lone hit, a one-out double by Trevor Coleman in the sixth. The 22-year-old left-hander lowered his ERA to 2.70, which would rank sixth in the California League if he had enough innings to qualify.

The Padres prospect started the season in the bullpen and made nine appearances before moving into the starting rotation in mid-May. He has not walked a batter in his last four starts and has issued only six walks while striking out 44 over 56 2/3 innings.

Lara, a converted catcher, fanned three over the final three innings for his first career save. The 24-year-old right-hander has not allowed a run in his last two appearances after going 0-1 with a 14.09 ERA in his first six.

Padres second baseman Orlando Hudson wrapped up his rehab assignment by going 3-for-3 with four runs scored. He smacked a three-run homer to cap Lake Elsinore's nine-run first inning. Nate Freiman contributed a grand slam in the opening frame and finished with five RBIs.

Mavericks starter Mauricio Robles (0-1) recorded just one out in his season debut and was charged with seven runs on two hits and five walks.
