Hernandez pitches Barons to series victory over Stars

Pedro Hernandez allowed one run over 6.0 innings of work, picking up the first win for a Barons starting pitcher this season as the Barons defeated the Huntsville Stars 6-2 in front of 5,759 fans at Regions Park.

Jose Martinez and Damaso Espino were the offensive stars for the Barons driving in a combined five runs and collecting four hits between them. Martinez finished 1-for-3 with three RBI while Espino went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, Jared Mitchell put the Barons on the board in the bottom half of the inning, tripling in Jon Gilmore and scoring on a Martinez groundout for an early 2-1 lead.

The lead increased to 3-1 in the fourth as Espino singled in Jon Gilmore. The Barons would tack on two more in the sixth as Martinez doubled in Gilmore and Jared Mitchell for a 5-1 lead.

Espino delivered again in the eighth, blooping a single to left to score Mitchell and giving the Barons a 6-1 lead.

With the win, the Barons won their first series of the season and improved to 4-6 in the process.

The Barons will travel to Chattanooga tomorrow afternoon to begin a five-game set with the Lookouts. RHP Nestor Molina (0-1, 7.27) takes the mound for the Barons looking for his first win of the season. He'll be opposed by Lookouts RHP Allen Webster (1-1, 4.82). First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 PM CT.
