Hill leads Redbirds by Royals

Jay drives in three runs in win
April 11, 2010

Omaha, NE - Rich Hill turned in a gutty performance in leading the Redbirds to a 6-4 win over the Omaha Royals Saturday night.

Following Friday night's marathon 18-inning win, Chris Maloney needed Hill (1-0) to soak up some innings. He did just that, throwing 104 pitches over six innings. The veteran left-hander pitched around six walks, using three double plays to get out of trouble. Hill allowed just one run on three hits.

Jon Jay led the 'Birds with a pair of doubles and three RBI. His two-run double in the ninth proved big as Omaha rallied for two runs in the bottom of the inning. Mark Shorey also contributed three hits in his first start of the season.

The Royals took advantage of a pair of Tyler Greene errors that led to three unearned runs.

Bruce Chen (0-1) suffered the loss for Omaha. Chen gave up three runs in 5.2 innings of work fanning six.

Notes: The Redbirds have beaten Omaha in 14 of their last 19 meetings...former Redbird and Cardinal right-hander Brad Thompson gets the start Sunday for Omaha.
