Hillcats mourn loss of team president

December 11, 2013

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Lynchburg Hillcats president Rex Angel, a member of the Lynchburg Baseball Corporation since its inception in 1965, died early Wednesday afternoon at Lynchburg General Hospital due to injuries suffered in a fall at home on Dec. 4. He was 85.

Angel's condition had been considered serious since he was admitted to the hospital after the fall.

Angel began his association with Lynchburg Baseball Corp. in 1965 as an accountant. In 1978, he became a stockholder and later was named vice president, director and member of the executive committee. In November 2009, he was named president of Lynchburg Baseball Corp.

"Rex's passing is a great loss for the Hillcats and Lynchburg. He was a dear friend to all of us and someone we all care deeply for," Hillcats general manager Paul Sunwall said.

Visitation is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. on Sunday at Heritage Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.
