Hultzen undergoes shoulder surgery

Danny Hultzen's lost season came to an inglorious end on Tuesday.

The Mariners' No. 2 prospect underwent surgery to repair a partial tear in his left rotator cuff on Tuesday, the team announced.

Hultzen also had his labrum cleaned up by Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Fla. While there is no timetable for Hultzen's return to the mound, he is likely to miss most of 2014. He had been slated to pitch for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.

"This is very unfortunate for Danny and his family, but we have nothing but high hopes for a good recovery and rehab," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said in a statement. "Danny is a tireless worker and will do everything he can to get back on the mound to start competing again."

After tossing 124 innings in 2012, the 23-year-old left-hander made only seven starts this season, going 5-1 with a 2.02 ERA over 35 2/3 innings between the Rookie-level Arizona League and Triple-A Tacoma.

Hultzen made his professional debut in the AFL in 2011, four months after the Mariners selected him second overall in the Draft out of the University of Virginia. The following year, he went 8-3 with a 1.19 ERA in 13 starts for Double-A Jackson and 1-4 with a 5.92 ERA in 12 starts following a promotion to Tacoma.
